Unit for Continuing Education

COURSE OBJECTIVE

This conversational isiXhosa course is an introduction to Xhosa speaking and assumes that the learner has no prior knowledge of the language. The course will focus on developing basic conversation skills and the facilitator will use examples from everyday situations to engage the delegates to practise their skills using dialogues and role-plays. In the process of building their vocabulary, delegates will also learn about isiXhosa customs and traditions.

 

COURSE CONTENT

Once the delegate has completed this course, delegates should be able to:

  • greet and use the appropriate courtesies
  • ask for help in various situations
  • know numbers, days, months and seasons
  • use question words to ask for quantities, weather situations and time
  • conduct a dialogue in a bank, restaurant or retail environment
  • ask for and give directions
  • respond to basic questions

Face-to-face teaching: 24 hours

Self-study and online learning: 6 hours*

Course Assessment: 1 hour

* This may vary dependent on the delegate’s individual pace of self-studying and online learning.

 

TIME

The face-to-face sessions will take place weekly on: Thursdays 5:30 to 7:30pm
